help with dvd movie not showing image and more ?

I just bought an used macbook pro 13" mid-2010 with apple care till jan 2014, insert a movie just the audio but no image. Worth mentioning is CD disk seems to be working.
Also just got an install dvd (retail one with snow leopard picture), if i need to
restore my laptop should the application disk also needed ? Right now I know Iphoto is not on the application must have been removed, how to get this app back ?
will buying a mac box set take care of everything restore back to original factory setting and the applications all bundle in one piece ?

have you tried vlc media player for watch movie , it can play many video format .. try to download vlc media player for mac, it's free ..
