specs & info:
2.4 ghz macbook aluminum edition 2 gig of ram, Snow Leopard.
-> just erased everything to 0, installed leopard clean install and upgraded to SL.
It works fine, I just want it to keep it that way. The following questions are not urgent or necessary, but will help me use my mac in the proper way.

questions:
1. Best way to upgrade ram? Cheapest / durability etc. Give me some tips please ;D.

2. I remember installing new firmware for my macbook. However, when after my clean reinstall I did not see this update in the software update list.

3. I have installed so many updates during the past 4 months, now turning my mac on it only updated like 6 things (10.6.2 was in there though). Please explain me why?

4. Scipts. I don't really know what they are but I heard they are good for your computer. I also heard that you sometimes need to manually run them. How should I do this and why? (I rather don't install onyx etc. to do this)

5. Preferences can slow down your computer. Which one should I really turn of to increase speed.?

6. How do I remove languages. I hear they take up a lot of space.

7. If I want to dual boot windows 7 (I need it for school to run SolidWorks :S);
7.1 What is the best application to do so? (Boot camp / parallels / others you heard of)
7.2 Slow down my computer?
7.3 Is there a way to get the drivers for a macbook for 64 bit?

Some more questions may follow =). Thanks for helping me.

1. crucial.com is probably the most widely recommended on these forums. You can enter your machine info and it'll tell you what is compatible. I'd suggest getting crucial brand RAM.

2., 3., 4. --> Run Software Update and you should get whatever updates you need.

Some of these are just imho:

2. A firmware update updates your hardware... it is not a software update... once it has updated your hardware, it's updated no matter what you do to the hard drive

3. uhm, because all those other things were in the 10.6.2 update

4. If you don't know what scripts are, you probably don't need them. I have not setup any personal scripts on my MBP in 3 years. The ones you are talking about do not need to be manually run in Snow Leopard, the OS takes care of it. And at some point, you will want Onyx or MainMenu on your machine.

5. Who told you that? Set your preferences the way you want after you have some experience with your Mac. Everyone is different. This is not Windows. There is no blackviper.com with tutorials on turning off all those services that don't need to be running here.

6. Leave the languages alone. You can cause other apps not to run properly. The savings in space is not worth the possible consequences.

7. Open BootCamp Assistant found in Applications - Utilities and print the user guide... read it... and follow it.

For the rest, time to do some of your own research and decide for yourself which route "you" want to use to run Windows. There are plenty of posts both here and all across the web with opinions ranging from one extreme to the other.

k thanks for the answers. Sorry that I do not want to spend days trying to figure out all that instead of concentrating on my video editing... geez.

Hmmm... I was going to add some information....
You spent the time asking the questions, and people took the time to try to help you, and your response in all honesty, doesn't really leave me wanting to provide any further information!
My intentions, as is with everyone else here on Mac Forums, to assist anyone that we can in any way to make their Mac experiences as pleasurable as possible, but in this instance, I feel that you should just concentrate on your video editing, and perhaps work it out for yourself in preference to showing such a lack of gratitude to those who took the time out of their own busy schedules to help you out!

Guys,
I am grateful that you take the time to answer. But geez. I have installed windows 7 on 3 macs for friends, I know how it works (My main question was actually how to get 64 bit drivers for a macbook (not pro)). As you might notice I almost never post questions (though I use my macs for over 4 years now). But this time I really wanted to get some personal advice from some experts.
Secondly I misread the second answer from bobtomay. I misinterpreted imho as something like dumb. So ye sorry guys. And to tattooedmac. Very funny... here is a better one: Let me google that for you
(take that as a joke please?)

Sincere Apologies.

Agree with the above. But I have kingston bransd ram in my imac and it works liek a charm and is roughly the same price as crucial. SO just pick a ram that is of a reputable name and remember to fit each mac with all it's ram sticks of the same brand and you're in business.
