If you want to back up to a external HD you should make a bootable copy of your HD with something like Superduper and in the link it gives you some tips.
Or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Great apps to use but believe CCC has some features you cant use unless you donate.
A bootable copy is great incase your HD goes downhill and not usable. You cant however use Time Machine for a bootable clone of your HD so i do recommend either of the above.
Then again this post could be futile not knowing exactly what you want to do.

Yes i guess i want to copy my Hd incase i loose data during installing two partitions and ubuntu on my mac.
Would this copy all data i have such as movies,photos,documents !!

Yep both those links i gave you will do what you want.
Personally i use Super Duper and basically once installed 2 or 3 clicks of the mouse and your done. Sit back with coffee and wait til its all backed up.

But as posted above it will make a bootable copy so if HD crashes you can always boot from the backup and you can still work until you get a new HD
