Snow Leopard freezes when trying to boot from Leopard (10.5) DVD
Hi. I have a new MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. I thought I would try to boot from my Leopard DVD just to see if I could. I hold down the "Alt/Opt" key and it recognizes the hard drive and the Leopard DVD. When I choose the DVD, the system just locks up and then I can't do anything.

I also tried changing the startup disk in System Preferences and then rebooted, but it still froze up on boot up.

Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

If you want to boot from the Leopard DVD, reboot while holding down the 'C' key.

Also, clean the disc whether it looks like it needs it or not.

    Specs:

Is this a Retail Leopard DVD? If it's a Machine Specific DVD that came with another model Mac, it will not work.

And if this is a computer that shipped with Snow Leopard it may not work.

    Yes. It's a retail copy.

Yes. My MacBook Pro came with Snow Leopard pre-installed. So you don't think it will work? I wonder why not? I might like to go back to Leopard some day.

I also tried booting from the disk on my other iBook G4 that I have running Tiger and it can boot to the 10.5 disk fine.

The Leopard disc would not have the drivers for your machine.

Hmm. So it doesn't have a set of standard drivers that can help you "get by", like Windows installs sort of do, until you can get the updated drivers?

Is there a way to make a customized Leopard disc copy that would include drivers for the install? Or can you not make custom install discs like that for Mac? (Probably more trouble than it's worth, though.)

You have Snow Leopard so just give Leopard a skip. The machine will not boot from Leopard discs period.
