Hi, I'm Micky, and live in Finland. I'm originally from the United Kingdom, and plan on buying a MacBook Pro after Christmas locally, and was wondering, will my new MacBook Pro have the English language preinstalled, or will I have to buy this separately. Obviously the OS will be Finnish, but my Finnish is not that good just yet, so prefer my Mac to have English.

Any help, or advice would be warmly welcomed.

Thanks in advance

Hello Micky & welcome.

I'm going to take an educated guess here...but there are plenty of folks on the website from a round the world that I'm sure will jump in as well.

I'm guessing that the computer will come pre-installed with the language pack most appropriate to the country where it it purchased. So if you are in Finland, then I would think that Finnish would be pre-installed.

But...since you are purchasing a new laptop & you're purchasing locally...you shouldn't have any problems getting the Apple Sore or Authorized Reseller to install the English version of the Mac OS for you.

I know that when you use a retail install DVD to install the OS you choose what language (from a long list of languages) you want to be the installed. The disks that you will get with the laptop will most likely be the same way...but since you are buying new, you can confirm this with the store...and more than likely if Finnish is installed by default I would think that the store would be more that happy to install the English version of the OS if that is what you prefer.

Hope this helps,

- Nick

Hi Nick, thanks for the warm welcome, and great advice. I will ask the reseller if they can install English OS for me, but failing that, hopefully with the supplied DVD I may be able to reinstall the OS.

Thanks again.

Not a problem. :) As Nick pointed out, the install media for your new Mac will allow you to do a reinstall to English if by chance the Finnish Apple store will not do it for you.

Regards.

Thanks again. I have emailed the reseller, and asked. Lets see what they say.

Someone advised me to hold off buying the 17" MacBook Pro 2.8ghz with 500GB HDD, stating that Apple will be releasing a quad core late January. Basically a new chipset.

I don't doubt this advice, and will hold off a little until this model is released, but wondered if any of you good people could either confirm this, or point me in the direction of news about this new chipset please.

What would I gain in waiting on this new chipset also?

Thanks again, your input has been greatly appreciated.!
