can't update to the latest version of the system and iTunes 9.02

Hi I'm new to the forum so I appologise if I'm posting in the wrong area!

I have done a search and can find similiar problems to mine but not the exact one again I appologise if I've missed something :|

I have a white Macbook 2.16Ghz with 2GB of RAM I updated to Snow Leopard when it came out and didn't have any problems I am currently running System 10.6.

For the last while I keep trying to update to the latest version of the system and iTunes 9.02 I cant.

Software update comes up saying that I need to update to 10.6.1 and iTunes 9.0.2 I then click on update software etc I get the license agreement thing etc click agree, then install the it starts as if it's going to update and then the next thing is it goes back to the start and hasn't updated anything it's driving me nuts, now I'm at the stage I need to update iTunes as I can't download some programmes now.

I've tried to download the updates directly from Apple's site and do it that way but exactly the same thing happens goes through the licensing agreement etc and runs as if it's updating and then goes back to the start as if I've not done anything again.

I would be SO GRATEFUL if anyone can shine any light on this for me or if there is a fix, there doesn't even seem to be anyway of contacting Apple's technical help (I'm in the UK)

Also even tho I've had Macs for years I'm not 'Tekky' so please be gentle ;D

Hi

Thanks for that but I'm afraid it's still doing the same thing, I downloaded the combo on the desktop and then went through the same things clicking on each bit as it comes up, then I click install, it makes out it's about to install and the install button greys out as if it's installing for a few seconds and then it just goes back to black as if I've not clicked the button, and nothing installs!!!

I'm completely baffled I had a download from Canon for my printer and that updated ok it just seems to be anything Apple since I updated to Snow Leopard it's as if the installer isn't working I tried trashing the installer .pls file as some folks had suggested but that didn't make any difference either is there anyway you can contact Apple by email to see if they can help? I can't seem to find a way of doing this either :D in all my years of having Mac's I've never come across this

How did you install Snow Leopard on your Mac? Upgrade to Leopard or an Erase and Install? If an upgrade, I bet something went wrong and the updater is somehow messed up. Have you tried repairing permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder?

Hi

I bought Snow Leopard when it came out and put the disk in and updated from that, I think I tried the Disk Utility thing but to be honest I've tried so many things :) I'll do it again and let you know how I get on I'm at work just now and the laptop is at home.

It sounds like you did the basic upgrade!

To repair permissions, go to utilities/disk utilities/Macintosh HD and click repair permissions

If it still doesn't work after the repairing permissions, post it, and someone online will give you instructions if you need, on how to do a clean install.

Hi

Thanks I did as you suggested and it still won't update software either by using software update or downloading from Apple and putting on the desktop and doing it from there. When I did the Repair Permissions there was this message not sure if it's significant but it said it couldn't repair it.

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

If I need to do a 'clean install' could someone explain how to do this.

That Suid warning is normal and nothing to worry about.
However, to clean install:
Insert your SL disc, and restart holding the C key as soon as the start up chime sounds.
Choose language, and click continue.
Choose Utilities>Disk Utility in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Choose Macintosh HD in the left column, and click erase tab.
Format should read as Macintosh OS extended (Journalled)... and if so, click erase.
This will take a few seconds, and once done, quit disk utility, and continue with installation.

And something to know, just in case you don't - a clean install will erase everything on your drive. So, if you have any data there you don't want to lose, backup first.

Am thinking before you try the clean install - try creating a new administrator account and see if it will let you install the update from there.

Ccan't Update

hi there,
I have followed the instructions on this thread and just completed a fresh install of OSX 10.6 on my 2.1GHz Mac Book. I have tried updating the software and still get the message The volume does not meet the requirements for this update. I am so fed up, I have been trying to find a solution to this problem for days now, am desperate, can anyone help?

OK... to go from scratch..... you have a clean install.... nothing other than SL following these steps as posted earlier.
clean install
Insert your SL disc, and restart holding the C key as soon as the start up chime sounds.

Choose Macintosh HD in the left column, and click erase tab.
Format should read as Macintosh OS extended (Journalled)... and if so, click erase.

after all that, your system should have rebooted, with all the fancy solar system graphics etc.....

If so, ignore the updates that come through automatically, and go to this link and try this.

Thanks for your advice. That is what I have done. I erased the HDD and when it finished installing I got the welcome video. I then ran the software updater and it said my software was up to date. I downloaded the 10.6.2 combo and tried to install that and got the same message (The volume does not meet the requirements blah blah blah) so I tried installing the 10.6.1 combo update and it wouldn't accept that either! I also tried verifying disk permissions, checking disk and everything, rebooted and it still won't do it, I checked that the account is an administrator and it is, so I also created a new account - still won't work. I am so frustrated!!! What have I done wrong??

Earlier on in your original post software updater was saying that there are updates available .... 10.6.1 and iTunes 9.0.2.
Now you are telling me that when you ran the software updater it said that your software was up to date!
You had me baffled in your original post and now in your last post.
Please clarify, if not for me to resolve, for someone else who may read this and have a solution.

Sorry for the confusion. I only just added to this thread which I maybe should not have done. My problem is since upgrading to Snow Leopard I have been unable to install any of the updates. When I run software update it says that my softrware is up to date but when I click on about this mac in the finder menu, it says I am running 10.6. When we all know that there has since been 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 released. Software update doesn't find them and if I download the packages manually and try to install them when it comes to the point where I select the Macintosh HDD to install them I get the message (The volume does not meet the requiremensts etc.)
I am fairly new to all this, should I post a new thread? I am really annyoed as I can't seem to figure out what is going wrong!

Hi 6String,
Thanks for your help so far. There has been a development, I came home from work and tried the software updater again and it found three updates for Keynote, Pages and Numbers (I re-installed these to check they still worked as I use 08). So it is definatly not a problem with the Software Updater tool. I just had a quick look and it has also installed updates for iTunes (now running 9.0.2) Remote Desktop Client(3.3.1) and AirPort Utility Software (5.4.2). So the problem seems to purely bee with Snow leopard. I can't understand it, are there any other checks I can do to find out what could be going wrong?
I also looked into the System Profiler, not sure if this helps:
System Version: Mac OS X 10.6 (10A380)
Kernel Version: Darwin 10.0.0b1

I'd think that your hard drive was failing or needed repair via disk utility, but since the other updates were successful, I suspect some corruption in your filing system somewhere.
Did you do a clean install, or an upgrade when you installed Snow Leopard?
All I can think is to boot from SL disc, and do a clean install, and see if that fixes it.
