Hello, I would like to know how to remove a user from my Mac.
When in Finder I have Devices, Shared, Places etc.. Under the Shared folder I have Stephen? I would like to remove this and add another user.
Thanks.

Thank it should just be a simple matter of dragging and dropping the offending folder into the Trash.

Yes, I tried that but it didn't work.

What about it "didn't work"? Any error messages? Can you elaborate at all?

OK, can't see the image because it's stored on your local machine.

But let me ask another question - did you purchase the machine second hand? If you did, the folder called "Stephen" may be your own Home folder, even though you have a different account name.

If that's the case, see this:

Mac OS X: How to change user short name or home directory name

I click network then the screen name shows up and then click or right click on the name and drag it to the trash can and it appears to follow but the name remains.

I purchase it from Comp USA before they went out of business. Everything was in order boxed and appeared to be factory sealed? But then where did Stephen come from?

A picture is truly worth a thousand words.

What you are seeing is not an account, its another computer on your network.

If you are on your own private network, then someone has joined it. If it's a public network, then I wouldn't be concerned.

Is there any way to get rid of it?

If it bothers you that badly you can always go to Finder, then hit Command+J (Show view options). In that menu you under one of those tabs (can't remember which one) you can uncheck the option to show the networked computers on the sidebar.

HOWEVER, if you are on your own network at home, I would really recommend trying to figure out who else is using your network. If your network at home is wireless and unsecured, I would secure it immediately becuase this means someone is mooching off your Internet.

Please clarify whether you're on your own home network, or on a public network.

If the former, understand that someone has essentially piggy-backed on your network. You'll need to either secure your network (if it's wireless) or check the computer names of other computers that belong to you, as this is probably one of them.

If it's a public network, then there's nothing you can do. The icon represents another computer that is sharing the same network and just happens to have file and print sharing enabled. It will continue to show up until you disconnect from the network or that person does.
