I want to install 10.4 on a G4 that doesn't have an internal DVD (only CD). I have an external DVD it wont install from that because its USB not firewire. Can i copy the install DVD to my external fireawire hardrive and install it from there? if not i'll invest the $30 in a new internal DVD drive.

You do need the external optical drive to be Firewire as PowerPC (PPC) machines do not normally boot from USB, even USB2. It will install provided the original disc is a full retail install DVD and not a gray coloured system restore disc from a different machine.

Have you tried making a disc image of the 10.4 install disc and putting it on your external drive? That should work... I think ;/

In your post you said you had an external DVD - that is what needs to be firewire to be bootable. From time to time Tiger is advertised on eBay etc in CD format - you may need one of those. Copying disk images of OS for install is flakey.
