MacBook Pro (10.4.11) not recognizing USB devices
I have a Macbook Pro (Intel) running 10.4.11. Since upgrading from 10.4.10 (my hard drive was replaced by Apple and that is what they reloaded) my computer will not recognize any USB device. It shows the device in System Profiler, but no icon on the desktop and I can not open it. I have reset the PRAM and repaired permissions with no change. Any suggestions?

I would first try downloading the intel 10.4 .11 combo update and running it outside is X's software update

Every now and then the updates can create problems and running a downloaded combo update may fix things

Thanks for the advice, but I tried it and no change. It will recognize an Olympus digital camera, but not a variety of cellular phones and other devices (all that used to work with this computer). Any suggestions for a next step?

You might try running USB Prober. It is located in /Developer/Applications/Utilities, provided you have installed the Xcode developer tools. (These are probably present on your Tiger installer DVD, if you have one, but another way to obtain them, if you have a broadband Internet connection, is to go to http://developer.apple.com, join the Apple Developer Connection as a free online member, and log in to obtain the most recent Xcode tools installer as a 1GB download.) Apparently, just running USB Prober does some sort of USB reset that can "wake up" unresponsive USB ports.
When all else fails, try everything!

I installed the USB Prober and ran it, but no change. My phone charges and I can still see it in System Profiler, but it still does not show an Icon on the desktop or allow me to open it.

Tried Safe mode yet? See if there are any changes.
    Hold shift during restart.

I am "assuming" you have opened Finder Preferences and added a check mark next to "External disks" under Show these items on the desktop?

    Welcome to Mac-Forums, Mike2006.

You might want what is suggested in this Apple Discussions thread, USB Device Not Recognized. It's a temporary workaround for Leopard but maybe it'll work for you too, since this is a Terminal trick. But remember it could be a temporary fix.

If it doesn't work, I would try to reapply the combo update again, starting in Safe Boot mode and with all unnecessary peripherals unplugged first. See if that helps.

Let us know how it goes. Good luck !

In my Finder preferences it only lists "Hard disks", "CDs, DVDs, and iPods", and "Connected servers" under "Show these items on the Desktop", but all of them are checked. I will try the temporary fix and reloading the Combo update and let you know, thanks.

You definitely should have "External disks" listed there as well.

I don't have a clue where to go from there besides a fresh install.
Maybe someone will have other advice.

I will try the fresh install. I forgot I had already tried that temporary fix with no results. Thank you all for the assistance. I will let you all know what happens.
