Every time I run verify disk I get
Code:
         Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked
	Volume needs repair
Then I do a repair permissions and it doesn't fix it. So obviously I am not supposed to do this I am supposed to do some other kind of repair. What is it?

Have you tried doing the disk repair from the install DVD instead of through Tiger?

You did boot from the disk and try it from there right?
Try booting in single user mode (command-s at startup) and running fsck -fy
until it quits giving errors. Then reboot.

You are booting from the disk and running 'Repair Disk' I take it?

If so and still get error message, in vest in DiskWarrior.

Great. That was actually what bryphotoguy meant when he suggested running Disc Repair form the install DVD. You cannot repair the system startup disk whilst running from it hence needing to boot from the install DVD and running from Repair Disc there.

You can use disk utility from the DVD without booting from it?
That's what I meant, sorry for not saying you needed to boot from the DVD.

Unless something's changed in the last couple years you hold down C at startup.
Option will give you a boot menu.

Just plain old hold down the 'C' button as you press the start button or select reboot if running.
