Hello all,

In the past couple of days I have noticed some problems with my MBP and was wondering if anyone else had experienced these. There's two main issues.

The first is that quite often when bringing my laptop out of its sleep but lifting the lid I am unable to enter my password to log on. Essentially I can move the cursor but they keyboard is completely unresponsive and actually clicking on anything doesn't result in an action either and so I am forced to reboot it. This doesn't happen all the time, however.

Secondly (and most infuriating) is the reliability of Safari. Within the past couple of days some pages seem to take an age to load, but most annoying is how it takes a few seconds to open a new tab, or when I enter something in the address bar it gets to two characters then I get the spinny beach ball, every time, it does sort itself out though. I did notice that Safari updated itself to 10.1 on the 31st, so i'm assuming that this is responsible.

Curious to know if anyone else has run into similar problems, I couldn't find much with a quick search.

Cheers!

Chris

Can you provide more information about your MBP?

Model and Year?
Mac OS X/Mac OS/macOS version?

Do you leave your Mac on overnight or when not in use? Mac operating systems run maintenance scripts, when the Mac is not being used, to do cleanup and organizing, which helps the OS performing well. You can also achieve these goals by using Onyx, https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/index.html, be sure to get the correct Onyx version for your specific OS version.

Ah yes, that might have helped.

Mid 2014 MBP running 10.11.6. I don't leave it on overnight, but there are long periods of time where it is on but not neccasarily doing much.

I don't really do maintenance on it, I let it take care of itself usually, but I did clear out all my cookies etc just yesterday to see if that helped, it did not.

Cheers,

Chris

@Chris

One or two ideas which might help (if not already tried).

In Safari > Preferences > Advanced > right at the bottom, check "Show Develop Menu in menu bar".

Quit out of Preferences.

In Safari > Menu Bar > Develop > choose "Empty Caches"

Then back to Safari > Menu Bar > Develop > Choose Disable Extensions. Quit Safari, then relaunch it.

Now see if things improve. Don't worry, any extensions you may have are not lost, merely disabled. You can re-enable them afterwards - one by one, I would suggest in case one is corrupt - in Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your suggestion, I've just given it a go and it didn't seem to solve the problem. Struggling to understand why it's happening, but I'm pretty convinced its to do with this update.

Thanks,

Chris

I think it is time to give Onyx a run. Have you done it yet? Make sure you download the correct Onyx version for your specific Mac OS version. Once installed, click on the Automation page and run it as is.

edit: Also Force quit Safari, then hold shift and open Safari, see if that helps. I also use Extensions in Safari. Click on "Safari" in the top menu bar, then select Safari Extensions. Scan that page for AdBlock Plus and Ghostery, and install them. Then, go through the set up procedures for Ghostery.

Sorry to dig this up, however I tried what was suggested but to no avail so have been trying to find the cause of the problem.

For the benefit of others potentially having similar problems, the issue was Trusteer. It didn't appear in my extensions so when I disabled them it was still running. Since disabling it Safari is back to its responsive self!

Hope this helps,

Chris

Suggest steering well clear of this software, even when offered free by banks. It seems to me much too few banks emp-loyee Mac experienced technicians. Of course these technicians simply do not understand about Macs and AV and security software. Have a read of this from Apple Discussions:-

Thanks for this Harry, I wish I had seen this before. Since uninstalling it my Safari performance has improved drastically.

Cheers!
