Word for Mac 2008 Home and Student recently quit opening after 3 plus years of no problems. Error message "... because of a problem ... may need to reinstall ... (OS X 10.6.8 (10K549))".

It sounds like the user identity data base has become corrupt. I have found that even when rebuilding it according to the MS instructions, it doesn't help. Use the Office 2008 uninstaller and then reinstall is probably the best way to solve it. You won't lose any of your documents or personal templates. Make sure you have your serial number on hand when reinstalling.
