Deleting dmg files?

I am one of the switchers that have enjoyed all the information to be found on this forum. When reading about installing new apps etc, I have got the clear impression that the .dmg files may be deleted after the installation process has been completed. I have tried to do so, emptying the waste bin. But on several occasions I am told that the files are still in use. Is there something that I have overlooked?

The most common install is this:
1. Download DMG
2. Mount DMG
3. Drag application from DMG into the Applications folder
4. Once copied over eject the DMG
5. Drag DMG to trash

If you're doing all of these steps there shouldn't be a problem. If you're getting 'in use' errors I'd suggest you've either skipped step 4 or have run the application straight from the DMG rather than from the Applications folder

Yes just delete them.

Oce upon a time when dialup was the go, folk used to burn all their .dmg files to a DVD in case they had to reinstall them after a hard drive replacement/failure. With today's DSL speeds, just simpler to download the latest version .dmg file.

Thanks - I hadn´t done step 4, as mrplow suggested. Very good help, no need to keep unnecessary files!
