Question Having Some Issues with Disk Images. Need some Help.
I really hope I can explain this well so it could be understood. Here goes...

Im having an issue with disk images and installing. When I download something like a program, it'll download as a disk image. When I click the icon that little drive pops up and the program works.

Here's the problem... Usually when I click the disk image icon a little window will pop up to install the program onto the HD. You usually drag some other graphic or icon onto something to get the program to install on the computer. That's not happening. Any program that is a disk image just wont install. So I always have to keep the downloaded disk image file, click on it, get the little white HD icon then click on that to get the program to run. but, it wont install to the Hard drive anymore.

So basically it will down load the program, but never install it. This just stared to happen. Any ideas as to why, or what I could do? What could I be doing wrong?

I hope this makes some sense. If someone could help it'll be appreciated. I really dont want to keep all these disk image icons on my desk-top to use a program.

What exactly do you mean when you say, "won't install?" You drag the image to, say, the Applications folder of your hard disk. Usually, the mouse pointer will have a green "+", and a "Copy" dialog will appear briefly when you let go. And then the program should be installed.

At what point in the above process do things go wrong? Is there any error message that appears?

No error messages. I wish there was.

I down load a program. I get the disk image icon. I click that icon then get the little white icon that looks like a drive. I click that then I have a disk connected to my computer, but it doesnt install the program. To finish using the program I have to close it and then eject it from my computer. After I do that, to use the program again, I have to click the down loaded disk image icon then go through the whole process again.

I used to be able to down load, click the disk image, it would install to my applications folder or wherever, then I could delete the original, first down loaded disk image file.

I wish I could explain it better.

Basically whats going on is that it wont install. I always need to use this disk image. Ive never had to do that before. It used to down load. Id click on the .dmg file. It would then install and I could trash that file because the program from that .dmg file would install.

Basically it always stays a disk image or .dmg and thats what I have to use every time I need to use a program thats a .dmg. Its never actually installed to the computer or a folder.

As far as I know Safari decompresses the file and opens the installer for you. After the installation is completed, Safari moves the disk image file to the Trash. this isnt happening at all.

It sounds like you are running the application from the disk image. Clicking on that app, isn't going to install the app into the Apps folder, you'll need to drag the icon in the disk image over to the Apps folder, like technologist said. Some applications do use an installer to install the applications into the Apps folder by you only needing to click continue and finish and so forth, but it doesn't seem like it's the case this time around. Hope you know what I mean.

    Yea that makes sense.
Okay, Ill drag the application icon to the folder I want it in. Now what about the rest of the files and folders that are associated with the application? Can I make a folder and get all of those files and folders for that application and just drag them in there?

    Thanks for the help.

If it's like the "readme.txt" and some .html files, you don't really need those. But just in case, if there is an instructional document to install the app, there might be more steps needed to install this particular app. But in most cases, you can just drag the app right over the apps folder without including all the other remnants, which came along with disk image. There's really no need to create a folder to contain the extras along with the app.

Sometimes its extras like... Plugins, add-on applications and other program documents for the main application.
