    denied access to terminal
I have a school laptop and I need to access Terminal but when I open it, it says "you are not authorised to run this application, the administrator has set a shell to an illegal value"

is there anyway to allow me to access terminal?

No..that error message is pretty precise about what you are not able to do.

What are the contents of the /etc/shells file? It's possible that there is a bad value in there.

Got the original install discs? Do a format of the drive and a clan install. You do not give processor details, however if it is an Intel model, fork out $29 for Snow Leopard and install that.
Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

There's no need to reinstall OS X for such a small fix. Let's not get carried away now.

Being a school 'puter may well have firmware password protection on it the admin forgot to remove?

And Snow Leopard is a much faster, leaner operating system than the slow, fat old Leopard.
