    Specs:
    20" Intel iMac 2.4 Ghz/3G Ram/320HD, Snow Leopard. PBook G4, 1.5Ghz/1.5 Ram/250 HD, Leopard 10.5.6.
No need to convert, iTunes and the iPhone handle mp3 natively.

If you're sure it's .mp4 you want, SoundConverter will do the job. Not free, but you can use it to a limited extent unregistered.

    Specs:
    2012 13" MBP (2.5 i5, 8GB)
Import them into iTunes, right click each file and select "Create AAC Version". That will convert your mp3 to m4a. Note though that you will now have doubles of each song.

If your goal is simply to play them though, Kevriano is correct - iTunes and the iPhone have no problems playing mp3s.

THanks guys. I am trying to drag and drop into iTunes, but the files will not show up in the library. I don't recall ever having this problem before.

For sure Kev, as VS also has explained. The reason I mentioned Sound Converter is that a) it is a superb piece of software, able to convert sound files into a vast array of formats, and b) when I bought it I wasn't aware of iTunes conversion facility [mind you, I'm still using version 7.6.2, haven't seen a compelling reason to upgrade]. It does the conversion though.

Cool. 7.6.2! Wow, HarryB would be proud of you, seriously old school!
I haven't upgraded to 9 mind you, just in case my music streamer doesn't support it, as it's no longer made.

Actually, I'd never recommend converting an MP3 file...reason: it's lossy compression. MP4 is also a lossy compression method. MP3s already have reduced sound quality, so by making them MP4, the quality will be even worse; if you don't hear digital audio artifacts already on the existing MP3s, you probably will by the time they're MP4s.

My recommendation: track down a LOSSLESS source (WAV, FLAC, AIFF, etc.) and convert THAT to MP4 if your heart's set on MP4 format.

Just for the heck of it, and because I'm an audiophile, I took a track of some seriously powerful vocal music and converted it to various formats. I heartily agree with Dauber about the .wav and .aifc formats, terrific! [didn't try anything else]. The rest pale by comparison - according to my ear.

The problem for anybody operating small hard drives (eg. this eMac has 40 Gb) is file size. From .mp3 to .aifc trebles the file size as a general rule. For anybody interested, .aifc will not play in VLC Player. I think that's about the only aud/vid file type it won't handle. Hmm.

Is it locked? Is it DRM protected - not that it should matter?
How are you trying to get it into iTunes?

I agree about formats btw guys. But MP3 is convenient for iPod use.

    Glad someone mentioned that.

No matter what some so called tests say, every test I have performed showed AAC is cleaner (I could hear the difference) at the same bitrate BUT, It's still a lossy format. If you convert from say 128k MP3 to 128K M4A (AAC) you will have even more loss than the MP3 had to begin with. If I was to convert to AAC it would be at least 320K AAC or Lossless but the size goes way up. If they are MP3 from say Amazon and you don't have the CD, leave it MP3. Everything plays MP3.

If you have the songs on CD's, I would just Re-Rip them to AAC of whatever bit rate you want. Way back I did some MP3 to AAC converts and what Dauber is saying is SPOT ON!
