When I try to open MS Word from my dock, finder, or open a specific file it quits right away and I get the error message "The application Microsoft Word quit unexpectedly."

I've tried deleting and redownloading the program, but it hasn't worked. The error report is as follows, if that can help anyone figure out what's wrong. Please help!

I'm not sure about your terminology above, but MS Word can not be legally downloaded from anywhere - except maybe for a trial version. Please clarify.

Which version of Word are you referring to and what version of OS X are you running?

Regards.

...and, was it functioning before? If so, have you recently downloaded/installed other software? Do you have other MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and do they work?

I just recently started having this same problem. I recently made the switch from PC to Mac. I purchased MS Office 2008 Home & Student Edition for my new Macbook Pro, and installed it successfully. I used it maybe two or three times, and had no problems with it. However, recently I tried to access MS Word (from my dock and my desktop), and a message popped up which read "Microsoft Word quit unexpectedly."

Also, when I clicked on excel, powerpoint, and entourage on my dock, nothing happened, but a light black question mark appeared over each of these icons.

I'm going to drag Word and every other office application icon into the trash bin, get rid of it all, then try to reinstall. Hopefully it works.

You can not uninstall Office 2008 by dragging the applications to the trash. Use the uninstaller that's included with the program to remove it. Then reinstall.

I reinstalled Office (which uninstalled any previously-existing versions of Office), and now it's fine.

Quick question -- is there any feature on my macbook that allows me to view all programs in a list and choose which ones to uninstall or remove (in the same way that the "add/remove programs" function works in Windows)?

Not built into OS X at least. Your "list" of Applications is your /Applications folder.

Hi. If you want to add to one of your posts, click the edit button. But, that's not the way to go if others have responded in the meantime.

Did you try Remove Office and reinstalling from the original disc, as was suggested above?

No one can tell you if you did something wrong, because you do not say what you did. But, I get the impression that this was not brought on by something you observed during a session on the computer, right?

I would like to add I am running it off OS X 10.6.1
Your machine is updating faster than you can keep track. ;)

Have you moved Word from the Office folder? I've read that moving Word from it's original install location can cause you to get this error.

To manually delete Office, you have to try to find everything related to it on your own.

Some that I know about:
Microsoft User Data (in Documents folder)
Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Entourage plist files (in ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft [also look one folder back in that path as I have some there too])

Use Spotlight to search for others with any of the Office apps names.

Entourage unexpectedly closes when opening "image not found" error

Have you moved Word from the Office folder? I've read that moving Word from it's original install location can cause you to get this error.

I had that problem with Entourage when I moved it from the Office folder to my desktop. Opening it from the icon on the desktop caused the immediate shutdown and "image not found" error. Apparently that "shortcut" wasn't actually linked propoerly to the program. If I just open it from the Office folder inside the Applications folder it works fine. Give that a try.
