Extract ppc or intel app from universal app

Hi,
There is a cool option in MacPilot that lets you extract a ppc or intel app from a universal app. But I don't want to buy this program just for that.
Is there another program (freeware) for this purpose?

If the application is Universal... what's the benefit in extracting one or the other?

It already works for both.

Speed is not the issue. It would run the same either way. A Universal Application takes up more hard drive space since it has code for both PPC and Intel. Otherwise it would make no difference in the way it operates.

No, why would it be?
By its very definition, a Universal app is a PPC app.
It just happens to be coded for Intel as well.

I thought I heard somewhere that individual processor apps where faster then the universal ones.

I concur with the others: there should be absolutely no performance penalty for running a Universal app, only a slight increase in overall disk space usage. See the Wikipedia article below for more information on why this should be the case:

Be aware that stripping the PPC or Intel code WILL break some apps. Not many, but there are a few.

So people know, 'Speed Download' is broken if you extract the ppc copy.

UPDATE: The ppc apps seem a little faster when extracted then running them as a universal app on my G3.

Thanks louishen, I like how it also removes extra language files from programs, which may help with speed, but if nothing else it saves disk space.

If you are talking about Application loading speed, on that very old and very slow bus G3, it might make a difference trying to figure which code to load or something. Who knows. Everything loads slow on my iMac G3. It's old.

Just be aware that those programs will break things. So, if you go to launch a program that won't work any longer, it's usually pretty easy to just re-install that one piece of software.
