Hello All,
Hopefully someone here can help me with my problem.

I talked my dad into having a imac and he loves it...apart from the mail program. I have set it up using Virgin Media. I cannot send emails from here ONLY receive! I have tried everything. VM say all is well at there end and all the passwords/server names are correct. I have even pinged the smtp.blueyonder.co.uk server from his mac and it is OK.

Is there something i am missing within the system that maybe blocking sent emails??? I get no error messages at all or any indication that something is wrong. Just that the email never arrives, even when sending one to himself. There is no firewall on (as far as i know..i too am new to macs).

If anyone can help i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks
Craig

This is so infuriating. I opened a Gmail account and used those settings in MAIL. Still i cannot send emails ONLY receive them. Proves it is nothing to do with Virgin Media.

Is there something within MAC OSX 10.5.5 that can stop emails going through??

Craig first question - are you using wireless?

If so go to System Preferences>Network>Advanced>DNS and make sure you have a greyed out address, the computers, and then should appear the Primary and Secondary Server details.

If not there ring your ISP and obtain both and enter. You can only enter numerals so do not bother with the Primary etc bit just make sure the primary number is first entered.

Hi Harryb2448,
I am not using wireless, it's a wired ethernet connection.

Sorry but i don't understand what you mean by primary and secondary servers. I have gone into system prefs/network/advanced/dns and in there is a greyed out list of servers (just numbers). there are 3 lines. What would i be asking my ISP for?

Thanks for your reply.

This question isn't meant to sounds as stupid as it might...

Are you also connected to the Virgin network?

My sister is a Virgin customer but when she comes to my house; in order to send emails she needs to change the SMTP address to that of my ISP otherwise they ain't going no-where. Although I think we do get an error if/when she forgets to make that change.

Anyway, I guess you got everything fine as far as the server settings go other-wise the Virgin tech should have spotted it.

In mail, go to Window and choose Connection Doctor and see if that gives you any indication of what is going wrong with your SMTP server (You will see status, account name and details for each incoming and out going server that you've setup).

Thanks RNDdave,
I have also used the connection doctor and it says that everything is OK, all connections are ok. Yes, his ISP is Virgin Media. He is now logging on to a google mail account which i have created for him but the whole point is to use the MAIL program and he can't. I'm not sure what to try next!
Thanks again.
Craig
