Anyone else have persistent crashes in Office:mac when working with large files? It has crashed twice on me this week. The only two programs to have crashed on my mac are MSN Messenger:mac and Office:mac - coincidence? I think not...

Office:mac froze up on me everytime that I used it. All of my files are big. It would say that my disk was full(RIGHT...I have 139 gigs free), that I needed to save it to another disk. I gave up on it, uninstalled it and went to back Tex. Now that's not running properly, either. I can't get Ghostscript installed.

I lost a big part of 3 HUGE files with office mac when it froze....very annoying.

If you're using Office 2004 on an Intel Mac, then huge files take ages to load.

Maybe I should have said 2008 (sorry!). Happy - I had a similar problem at work when using documents that had embedded objects (such as excel spreadsheets) in them.

My embedded object swere from microsoft equation editor. i don't understand WHY office thought that my disk was full. I contacted tech support for Office and got no real answers. So I just ditched it.

Very frustrating.

If anyone knows how to install Ghostscript, I'd like some help there.

Office Mac Crashes

Hi Physicist,

We have been having exactly the same problems. When we have tried to modify an embedded Excel document in a Word document Word crashes. Also have the same problem with word only documents. E.g. open word and you get a new document. Click on "View", click on "Formatting Palette". Type in a word, highlight the word you have just typed and then select the font colour icon (it's a capital A with a red bar underneath), voila!! Word crashes. Now a one word document is hardly a large document.

I am in the process of trying to sort this out with Microsoft tech support. Will let you know if anything results.

A possible solution. This has resolved the issues above for me

For Word...click on the following:

Go>Home > Library > Preferences > com.microsoft.word.plist ( trash)
Go>Home > Library > Preferences > microsoft > com.word.prefs.plist (trash)

Make sure to empty trash. Restart computer. Be careful to select word.plists as excel, entourage, etc all have plists as well.

I received this solution from Msoft tech support and it seems to have worked.

Regards
Bozzo

NeoOffice is perhaps a better solution. It is also free. NeoOffice is compatible with all popular MS-Office file formats, and while it is not a 100% clone, if you are comfortable with MS-Office, you will feel right at home in NeoOffice. NeoOffice is the only office suite I have loaded on my new MBP.

1st time: experiencing Office 2004 Word crashes - help / suggestions

I have never experienced crashes in Word before! This comes as a great surprise to me given the stability of MS Word over the years. The problem is as follows: I am writing a document (a transcription of an audio file) and using Tables and Borders. In particular, I use the "outside border" and "shading" options to note, to the right of the document, the time segments associated with the the interview that I am transcribing. Something like this:

52m 45s

but with a border and slight shading. After a while, the document crashes. I have also experienced a crash when using the Formatting Palette and, in particular, the "highlighting" option, when I want to color a segment of a document that I intend to edit and / or re-work.

Should I look for a virus or bug or have other users experienced a similar problem?

MacBook white 160GB. iPod nano... old school one.
I've had no problem with Microsoft Office:Mac. And I've used both 2004 and 2008 with my Mac. Well, I guess MSN messenger logged out on me once. But that's it. I've had no problem with the other 4 apps.

I used to have this problem until Microsoft released an Update for office:mac that helped stop annoying crashes

You have not provided model etc. If you have a new Mac with office 2008 Trial Version, make sure it is uninstalled before installing the full version and take it you have downloaded the 180MB 12.1.0 update?

The only way to prevent crashed because of Microsoft programs is to uninstall them. Trust me, just do it and you will be much happier.:D

Suggest you try bozzo's suggestion. Office 2008 for Macintosh 'The Missing Manual' advises going to Home>Library>Preferences>Microsoft>Office 2008 and drag to the desktop Microsoft Office 2008 Settings.plist and any other Preferences files causing troubles, such as Word. Restart and a new set of fresh, clean files are made.

If that solves your problem then trash the old files from the desktop.
