There is some quality loss when I import an avi file, edit and export in iMovie (it always exports in mp4 for some reason). I was told mpeg stream clip can convert the file to make it more iMovie friendly. Here are the specifications for the avi file:

Size: 1.09 gb
Duration 2hrs5min
Frames: 29.97fps
Resolution:640x480
codec: (icod)

I want to play it on my mac and hopefully PC

First: use MPEG Streamclip to convert the AVI to Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). You'll find this in the settings under "Export QuickTime Movie." This will result in a larger file, so be sure you have LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of free space.

Second: NOW edit the film in iMovie.

Third: Once you have it edited in iMovie the way you like, THEN "share" it to whatever format or what have you that you want.

Thanks. Are there any other settings I should change like frame rate, frame size, interlaced scaling and so on?

Probably not needed, but you'll have to do the conversion and have a look to be sure. If the AVI looks good, the AIC .mov file will look equally good.

Thanks again. I played around with the settings, put quality on 100, unselected interlaced spacing, put 29.970 for frame rate and left the frame scale alone and it worked out great. the .mov was 13gb, but it was still easy to edit
