If iMovie has a tough time opening the file, it perhaps isn't a valid file. Does it play properly in Quicktime or VLC? If not..you might want to fix that first.

iMovie will allow you to join the two files with no problem.

    Regards

    Hi,

My Quicktime will not run the AVI Add on but VLC does! So the file works I watched the 2 files last night in VLC player!
When I go onto import on iMovie it will not let me click on it it shows up faded!

I recently did this with a whole bunch of AVI's that I'd created with my camera and created a single long movie file with transitions between the various imported files and it worked great.

I would think it's grayed out the entry because it think it's incompatible, I don't have a Mac at work to try it out..will try it out at home and repost..

    Regards

    Specs:
PPC Mini, 10.4.11. Intel Mini, 10.6.8. White MacBook, 10.9.5. iPhone 3GS.
.avi files are containers for the elements of the movie, and can be produced with various codecs. Some are compatible, some aren't.

Try opening them with MPEGStreamclip, and if successful, export to Quicktime and use the Apple Intermediate Codec option, and they should then be accepted by iMovie.

I definitely recommend MPEGStreamclip. It's real easy to use, just open the avi with it, and choose one of the exports to output to mov or dv or something. It shouldn't take long at all.

If you want to do anything with these avi's you'll have to bother with this five minute procedure. That's five minutes from downloading the application to having it export. Here's the link.

    Specs:
Aluminium Macbook 2.4 Ghz 4GB RAM, SSD 24" Samsung Display, iPhone 4, iPad 2
    Try this:
    - Install Perian, install Quicktime 7
    - Open movie 2 in QT7, hit command+a (to select all), then command+c (to copy)
    - Open movie 1 in QT7, scrub to the end of movie 1 and hit Command+v (to paste)
    - Save

Perian will allow you to playback just about anything in quicktime, and quicktime 7 has some more advanced tricks up its sleeve that have been ditched in quicktime x.
