• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

VLC will, quicktime will with perian installed, I think plex will.

Now, there are certain avi's that won't play due to the codec used for the video/audio (ie: vp61 codec) and any container/codec that supports windows DRM, if the windows media player DRM is attached, won't work (ie: if you have a drm .wmv file it won't play AFAIK).

What he said was to download Perian, which adds support for most types of .avi files:
Perian - The swiss-army knife of QuickTime® components

If that doesn't work, try VideoLAN Client (VLC). It's an alternative to Quicktime for playing videos.

Also install Flip4Mac (the freebie version). This will let you play back some .wmv type of videos.
Telestream Flip4Mac WMV - Overview

Between all these, if it won't play, you likely are SOL. There are a few types of encodings that are supported only in Windoze.
