Try Burn. For compatibility's sake, burn at the slowest speed. Some DVD players are picky about media brand and burn speed.
Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

OK, that's the best freeware I know of for the Mac, if you want something better check into Roxio's Toast, but it's not free.

I don't believe so, but you can read more about it here.

    iMac late 2007 10.11.b4, iMac 2008 10.10.5, Macbook2007 10.7.5, Mac Mini 10.7.5, iPhone 3GS Note 8!!
I use toast all the time to do what you are trying to do and it works fine. One warning though, it does take a while to do the conversion part from AVI, MP4 or whatever to a DVD format before the burn even begins. I would recommend VisualHub but they stopped making it. It's much faster doing the conversion.

It takes a long, long time to render video for burning to a DVD. Hours
