• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

This question is for my school; it does not deal with piracy in any way whatsoever. We have a movie we had someone make for us... it is a dramatization about how our school began, a small music school for students with special needs.

I have the DVD in front of me. We need funding for a student to come back next year. In the package we're sending out by email, we want a few short clips from this DVD.

My issue is how to achieve this. I was thinking I would rip the DVD via Mac The Ripper... but can I then import into iMovie?, will iMovie recognize it? If so, I can isolate a clip and export it, I would think?

Any suggestions most appreciated. Thanks so much.

For isolating small clips and saving them in an emailable size I use
MPEG Streamclip

Its simple and basic but gets the job done with the minimum of fuss, and has a good range of encoding options

I use it for the sales staff at work who often want clips out of corporate DVDs for their presentations

Thank you. I downloaded MPEG streamclip. I don't get how to set my in and out points though, for export. Can you tell me how to do this? Thanks.
