The Sent box is there. I don't know why Drafts disappeared before. It has now reappeared after I saved a message, and is now still there after the message was removed. However, there is now a triangle next to it which reveals On My Mac and Waitrose boxes; the draft message was in the Waitrose box. Odd!

    PS

I quit Mail and then reopened it, and Drafts has disappeared again!

As I recalled with IMAP accounts, often some mailboxes would just disappear using Mail.app if they didn't have any messages in them and/or depending on the settings in "Mailbox Behaviours".

I can't speak for other IMAP accounts.... Google IMAP accounts (gmail) and folder hierarchy on the server will be reflected in Mac Mail. This is great is you access your mail from more than one device such as an iPhone, iPad, or another Mac. But as soon as you make changes on one of those devices, say you delete mail, those changes will be reflected on all devices.

That is the primary reason mail boxes or mail mysteriously disappear. This is usually the result of a lack of understanding by some users of how IMAP works.

The above is why I still keep a POP account on gmail in addition to my IMAP account. Google gives individual accounts 15GB of free storage so why not use it?

    Bob:

'Classic Layout' is not checked. What difference will this make? (I'm so wary now that I fear any change is going to result in my losing something!)

Wow!!! Most interesting and informative Charlie. I didn't realize that one could have and use both POP and IMAP with the same account. Neat.

Patrick: I’ve looked at the two websites. When I hold the cursor over a mailbox I don’t see “Use this mailbox for”.

Now here’s a curious thing. In Mailbox Behaviors if I choose On My Mac I get deleted messages from 5 Sep to 15 Sep. If I choose Trash under that, I only get deleted message from 5 Sep to 11 Sep. However, I’ve just deleted another message, and it doesn’t appear in either option.

    Another curiosity:

There are two items in my (OnMyMac) Spam box. Deleting them does not work, so I have dragged them into Trash, but they also remain in Spam. They won’t drag into Desktop Trash.

There is also a message in (OMM) Deleted Messages which I cannot delete.

There’s also another problem: I’m not getting e-mail notification of replies here.

The most recent Mailbox problems mention in posts #21 and 22 might be resolved by rebuilding your Mailboxes - I don't think anyone has mentioned this before...

    To do this:

Click on a Mailbox eg Spam (On My Mac) to highlight it. With it highlighted -

Click on "Mailbox" in the top menu bar. From the Drop Down Menu, choose the last item "Rebuild".

When done, repeat for each one of the dodgy Mailboxes. I'm afraid you need to do this one by one.

It's a safe and reliable thing to do.

I’ve tried a rebuild on some boxes, and I must have included the Spam box because that is now empty. However, any deleted items from my Sent box are disappearing but still not appearing anywhere else.

My Trash mailbox has now reverted to messages up to 11 Sep.
