+1. Agreed, and as I mentioned and suggested back in post #54.

No idea if the OP tried doing so or not.

BINGO! It's the hub. When I connect the drive to one of the usb ports on the iMac rear, it shows up with a restart holding down the Option key. When I reconnect the drive to the hub it no longer shows up on the restart. Problem solved.

Many thanks to all for helping out and a special thanks to Patrick and Rod for coming up with the answer.

@Mark F et al. Some hubs work as connection points for USB drives that you are going to boot from. I've used a few that work with most of the drives I've tried so the possibility of a hub issue didn't occur to me. I can tell you that you have a better chance of success if the drive draws power from an electrical outlet. It's possible that some drives may not play nice with this arrangement.

Thanks for posting back and letting us know the answer

    Sly and Mark F:

Even some powered hubs don't work right with USB 3 and USB 3.1 devices. It seems USB 3.0 and 3.1 devices are a lot more sensitive to power and cable length. I wound up throwing away a USB 3.0 hub that caused errors.

Anyway, glad you resolved the problem. Sometimes it's the simple things that are overlooked when trying to resolve errors.

Just for the record in case it helps others in the future, the hub is plugged into a ups, and is itself powered.

For that matter, some USB Powered don't work properly with some USB devices regardless of the version — including USB 1.1 and USB 2.0. Then there are some USB cables that can tend to go goofy for some strange reason.
