iTunes starts by itself, MacBook headset confusion every time.
    Hello all,
I have bluetooth headset for iphone7 and macbook. Works great with phone calls, also when listening to webcasts, browser, youtube, etc. Sometimes (randomly??) when a call comes in, iTunes starts and the phone jumps audio from bluetooth headset ( Plantronics Voyager 3200) back to the phone and I have to switch the phone audio to Voyager again to talk, once this happens it seems to continue as more calls come in. Even though I quit iTunes every time as soon as it pops up. Other times (randomly ??) iTunes turns on without a phone call and my headset (same one) jumps to iTunes. I don't listen to itunes on my mac, mainly on my iPh but I keep the library on the mac.

How do I turn iTunes off so it doesn't randomly or whatever is triggering it ????, turn on unless I click the app, I thought in preferences I could set this but didn't see it, which would only be to load music on my phone and I read another post where it was suggested the imazing is a great app to manage music and phones, perhaps I don't need iTunes at all? I've never been a fan of iTunes so I'm happy to dump it but I've got many directories of music, many duplicates too in itunes media and album artwork.

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you actually quitting iTunes completely? The red "X" does NOT do that, it just pushes iTunes into the background, where it is still running. To quit it completely, click into the iTunes window, then click on "iTunes" on the top bar and select Quit iTunes. That will properly shut it down completely. I don't know if this will fix it, but from your description, iTunes could be still running in the background.

Jake's extremely useful reply will, hopefully, not only solve your problem; but highlights the difference between "close" and "quit".

As he pointed out, for any app at all to Quit, click on the name of the app in the top Menu bar and choose "Quit x". The quit option is always at the bottom of the list.

The other way is to use the Keyboard Shortcut - Command + Q.

The situation is made all the more complicated by the fact that certain apps do "Quit" when you click on the red "X"; whereas others merely close.

So, if Quit is the intention, choose one of the two methods mentioned at the beginning of this post.

    Thx Jake, Ian,
Yes I understand the difference and yes I'm quiting completely every time. Sometimes even with force quit and selecting iTunes that way to be sure I'm quitted stopped completely. But then again some time later, I can't identify the trigger but it seems to be like I described randomly?? but it will start again. It has something to do with the bluetooth head set and using it on the phone and mac and when I'm connected to the mac looking at youtube, browser videos, etc. then the phone rings and the headset kicks out of mac into phone answer mode and says answer or ignore call and iTunes starts again. It seems like then the bluetooth headset sees the iTunes start and thinks I want to use the head set with itunes and starts listening for what iTunes starts playing, which iT goes into a "can't find some songs" mode, which I don't even know why it's looking for that song, I don't have it in any playlist or anything. I would just dump the music but I'm guessing that won't solve the problem of that error, but that error is at the end of a line of problems, first of which is I don't want iTunes to randomly start. Does iTunes have some sort of default music starting feature? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try this: Open iTunes, then Preferences, and Devices. Put a check in the box beside "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically." That may be what's waking up the iTunes. I use BT earbuds and iTunes doesn't wake up at all.

Can you tell us which model headset is involved? I think what is happening is that the headset is trying to work with both devices simultaneously. Some can handle that and some cannot. For starters look at the directions for the headset. I think that the headset has a button used to answer the call and that same button is used to launch iTunes.

I have a similar situation with one of the headsets I useMost of the buttons have two differnt functions controlled in part by how long you hold the button down.

bluetooth headset ( Plantronics Voyager 3200) with USB device for switching between macbook and phone.

I agree that it's the headset that can't figure it out and perhaps if Jake's pref suggestion doesn't work I'll have to go to them and ask more support on the details. I've reviewed the buttons and they aren't part of this situation and problem. But the headset logic seems to be the driver if the iTunes prefs don't fix it. I'll keep posting thru completion. Thank you.
