I apologize to all who tried to help me, for being such a nerd. I thank you all for your help.

Don't apologise. What are we here for, if not for you.

Point is: have you solved the problem?

Patrick, I downloaded SafariSort but my security settings wouldn't allow me to open it because it is from an "unidentified developer"
I don't know what changes the macOS 10.13.2 made, but have a look at the terrible video attempt for how to allow shown here:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mf-2-RcbDbI

Or you could "disable SIP", but that's a bit more elaborate. Just google it if needed.

Yes, I think that I have solved the problem, at least partially. I can delete the bookmarks that I no longer used by simply dragging them to the trash. I can also move bookmark around by simply 'drag and drop'. I have to admit that I am a bit embarrassed by how simple the solution was.

Been there, done that, got the tee-shirt. (Actually, a large collection of tee-shirts, if the truth be told.)

Not much difference to when a person is shown how some magic trick is done and then it seems so simple.

I sometimes find it a bit awkward to delete bookmarks by dragging them to the trash. You can right-click a bookmark and choose "delete" from the drop down menu.
