Hi

I've tried a search but can't find anything about this, so hopefully someone can help me out

I've got quite a lot of music that I am copying across to my new MBP, and am trying to save as much space as possible. I have a lot of songs where they are on an original album and also on a greatest hits or compilation cd. Is there any way to just have one instance of the song, but have different links to it in my iTunes library, rather than having to have the mp3 on my hdd four times?

Thanks in advance

I thought you might say that. Its a shame really, I've spoken to a few people who were wondering the same. Definitely something that should be looked at.

It has to do with how the iTunes data base relates to song files and the ID3 tags. The tags themselves do not allow for multiple artist/album entries and if you leave the fields blank it doesn't do you any good either.

a pain i know but you could set up the albums as play lists - delete all the multiples, and add the one song to all playlists that it occurs in - would mean effort to set them all up (supposing you have a lot of songs) but it would solve the problem once done - you'd just name the play lists as the albums and you should be able to search as usual, albeit via a a playlist instead of album name

I like keeping them as they are, because sometimes the recording are different, or re-mastered. Of course I don't have allot of group duplication as far as album to album of the same artist. I do however haver over 9500 tracks. So I can understand you desire to save space. But I keep mine all on a server, and an external drive for backup.
