is there a way to set itunes to read from a specific folder and recognize when something in that folder has changed? For instance:

Close iTunes
If I delete a song.
Add a new song.
Add another new song.
reOpen iTunes

(it would show the old song as gone and then new songs in my library)

All of this without importing anything.

Thanks

Not *too* sure what you're talking about, but check in iTunes>Preferences, under the General tab I believe. You can set which folder iTunes should read from.

Sounds like a job for AppleScript....

I don't think that iTunes has this functionality built in, but I'm sure that if you used Automater or the apple-script suggested above, you'd be able to to do this.

Well, I can't use applescript or automator for this since I want this functionality for the jukebox I built for my house. The jukebox is made out of an old arcade game shell with my old PC and monitor as the internals. The way it is set up right now is that all my roommates can upload to it and then I manage duplicates. But when I do delete something iTunes doesn't recognize that it has been deleted until you actually click on that song and then it puts a little exclation point next to it. Then it asks if you want to delete that song-link from your library.

So what I want is for everything in iTunes to reflect what is CURRENTLY in that folder when I close it and reopen it. So new songs will be automatically added from that folder and deleted songs won't stay in the library, they will be completely deleted.

It would almost be like a fresh library was created each time I opened up iTunes instead of just having links to songs.

None that I am aware of. iTunes will not do what you want since it only looks at it's database, not the actual contents of the folder itself. You would need to find a way to get the iTunes database to automatically update when the folder is changed. Applescript might do this, but if you can not use it, you may be SOL.

I actually tried that but that didn't work because the library apparently reads from the iTunes Library file.

I think I can explain what I mean better now. Remember old school winamp where you would open it up without a playlist and it would be blank. Then when you wanted to listen to music you would chose a folder on your HD and then all the music from that folder would be in winamp. Yes I know winamp was slower because of that very reason, but still... that is what I want. A way to reflect exactly what is in a folder in iTunes without having to delete my library every time.

I do realize one way to do this is to delete my iTunes Library file every time I close and reopen it, but I would rather not do that.
