Whilst ripping my cd collection onto i-tunes, several times with a few cd's - cd's that had been cleaned I should add, it got half way through importing and would then get stuck on a track halfway.

After patiently listening to the cd drive start up and slow down and starting at that horrible, nasty rainbow circle I tried every way possible to abort but my MBP was determined to burn that cd.

As much as I appreciated it's determination to please, I had other stuff to be getting on with, but instead of giving me a message on the screen saying, 'Sorry mate, I tried my best but I just can't get past this scratch on track 8 but I just can't do it' - it stubbornly carried on until I had to force quit which was also ignored initially until I simply held down the on/off button which I don't like doing.

Force quit can't be good for the system, is there another way out when something like this happens?

I had a similar problem once with a DVD, it just wouldn't give it back and each time I pressed eject it started to play it again. Fortunately this hasn't happened for a while but when there's a disc in there you want spat out and it won't give it, there's not a ot you can do.

I had the same issue with a couple of CDs ripping into iTunes. I did the same as you and used the Force Quit. The drive kept on going but after maybe another minute it finally stopped and allowed me to eject the disk.

Did you wait long after quitting iTunes or would it not quit at all?

Alas, I am not blessed with great patience.

I was generous enough to give it at least 5 minutes and I figured if that wasn't enough time for a new to the market laptop with Intel Core Duo then I would reluctantly have to assist.

I had the same problem. It bugged me that it just kept trying and trying without failing too. I guess that can be a good thing sometimes. :)

I force quit as well...
