    Specs:
    20" iMac C2D 2.16ghz, 13" MacBook 2.0ghz, 60gb iPod vid, 1gb nano
PC's can't read Mac formatted disks. If you want it to work across both platforms you need to format it on the PC (you will lose everything on it)

Yes. Macs can read drives formatted for either OS X or Windows, but Windows can only read Windows formatted drives and not OS X formatted drives.
the back of our computer looks better than the front of theirs

By the way, I don't know if this is true for iPods as well, but for normal external hard drives, you will find that the read/write is performance between the Mac and the iPod is significantly better if you leave the iPod formatted for Mac vs. Windows. Do you REALLY need to use an iPod for this purpose? If so, be prepared for a potential slow down.
My Macs: iMac 27" 3.4 GHz, Mac Pro 3.2 GHz, PowerMac G5 Quad 2.5 GHz, G4 Cube with 1.2 GHz Upgrade
    My iStuff: 64GB iPhone 5, 64GB iPad4, 30GB iPod Video, 16GB iPod Touch
My OS': Mac OS X Lion, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Mac OS X Tiger, Mac OS 9.2.2, openSUSE 10.3
