    ipod summary
I have a 5th gen ipod nano which has given me years of good service. In the last few weeks when I have come to sync it with my itunes library on my imac when the device appears in the itunes sidebar clicking on it no longer brings up the summary page as previously. Instead I just get a message saying that there isn't enough room on the ipod to sync but as I can't get to the summary, I can't see what is on there or how to delete stuff I don't need. Anyone got any ideas????

    Welcome to our forums.

The 5th generation iPod Nano came in two sizes: 8 GB and 16 GB. Which model size do you have? Also, since 5th generation iPod Nanos are getting a bit old, how is the battery in yours holding up? The reason I ask is if the Nano if not charged or is defective, the summary will not show up in iTunes. You also did not tell us which version of iTunes you have.

What you can try... is to reset the Nano with iTunes which will wipe it clean and reinstall the latest software for that model. Before doing that, make sure that you have all the music or whatever else is on the Nano saved somewhere else - either in iTunes or another folder.

If it turns out the battery isn't holding up, it won't be worth it to replace it. Replacing the battery yourself in a Nano is a very difficult job and Apple charges as much as the Nano is worth to replace it. Might as well buy a new one. By the way, I'm speaking from experience as I own a 5th generation 8 GB Nano.

    Hi there,
Thanks for the response, it is an 8gb and the battery is holding up fine, I have itunes 12.5.5.5. I think I may have found the problem, previously when the ipod was connected I used to click on the device, this morning, I clicked on the ipod symbol closer to the top of the page and hey presto, there was access to the summary page. Thanks for trying to help

Good to hear. Yeah, with the latest versions of iTunes, Apple changed the way iDevices appear for the summary option. I have various iPods, 2 iPhones, and an iPad, so when I open iTunes, they all appear in the top menu as small symbols. Sometimes, clicking on the small symbol or icon will open the summary, sometimes it doesn't. When that happens, I close iTunes, and restart it. That usually solves the problem. Glad to hear your 5th Gen iPod Nano is still alive. That particular Nano was one of the best from Apple. The newer ones are more fragile.
