You didn't mention where in the US you're visiting but if there is an Apple store nearby that would be the best place to buy a new unlocked iPhone. Apple still sells the SE, 6s, 7, 7+ and of course the 8, 8+ and X iPhones. You can purchase any one of them unlocked. A new SE with 32 GB is $349.00. You can also get a SE with 128GB for $449.00.

A lot depends on your personal use of a mobile smart phone. What do you use a mobile smart phone for other than making and receiving calls? The apps that I have on my iPhone may or may not interest you. As far as your lack of knowledge about iPhones, you can ask the sales folks at the Apple Store. They would be happy to run you thru the ins and outs of whatever phone you choose. And since you intend to take the phone out of the US back to your home in India, make sure you find out which models are compatible with the carriers in India.
