So my wife got me the iphone 5s (t-mobile) for my b day. We travel once a year outside the U.S. so I would like to get it unlocked so I can buy a pre paid card when we are on vacation. Here is the question will this (getting the unlock code) make my phone blacklisted???? Ive been reading about this blacklist thing and dont really understand it. Once its unlocked will it still be blacklisted by t-mobile???? Thanks.

You need to double check this with T-Mobile.... but my understanding is that all you need is a sim card from a carrier where you'll be traveling. Remove the T-Mobile sim and put in the pre paid sim from the other carrier and it should work. There is no need for unlocking your 5s. Anyway, I don't believe it's locked since T-Mobile no longer requires a contract to use it on their network.

I'm a T-Mobile subscriber (have been for years) and that's my understanding of how it works but as I stated above, you need to double check with your local T-Mobile store sales agent or call their 800 number customer service.

Yeah, that's why I advised you to give T-Mobile customer service a call or drop in to one of their stores. I'm still under contract for another year and currently paying off my phone every month. But when I spoke with a T-Mobile sales guy at my local store, he seemed to indicate that since they did away with contracts, the phone is independent. Of course if you buy a 5s from T-Mobile, you'll be obligated to pay it off in monthly installments for two years. But I don't believe it's locked.
