    Some Questions Regarding iPhone Upgrade
    I purchased my iPhone 3G in December of 2008, today I called #639* and received this message:

    "A full discount on a standard handset or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time but you may qualify on 03/16/2011. We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price with a 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please visit a participating iPhone sales location for pricing on this offer."

    In that case, how much would a iPhone 4 cost me to buy in July? what exactly is this discounted iPhone upgrade ?

    I'm a little confused with the pricing. It is listed as: 16GB for $199, and 32GB for $299. but are these Discounted Upgrade prices or what one would pay buying an iPhone for the first time?

    Starting a new service, you get the 16GB for $199 and 32GB for $299. If you are eligible for upgrade, you get the SAME price as the new subscriber. If you are still under contract, like you are until 03/2011, then you can still get the iPhone 4, but you will pay a higher price for the 16GB and 32GB phones..not $199 and $299, but maybe 50-100 more..so $299 and $399 or something..you'll have to ask AT&T what the exact price bump is..

    Ouch..and I thought I was being generous with my price bump..so it's actually $200..so it's cheaper to just take the ETF and then buy the phone like a new customer..

    This makes no sense to me. You purchased 12/2008, but won't be eligible until 3/2011??? That's 27 months! That just doesn't seem right, but maybe I'm missing something that's obvious to everyone else....I'd call AT&T.

    Does that mean that all I have to do is commit to them for another 2 years and pay 18 bucks and I can get a new device or do I have to pay for the new device + the $18?
    device price plus $18.... i would think if it was only $18 there would be a mad run for the iPhone 4 :}

    Unfortunately 27 months is right. I'm on a family plan - and a sibling of mine broke her phone twice - used her original upgrade the first time and then mine the second time. Sad.

    Anyhow, my 3G contract expires ~11/2010. My reply from *639# was:

    Well I'm bummed. I bought weeks too early for the 3GS, and now I'm not eligible for the upgrade until January. Sucks when you get skipped for TWO upgrades. Oh well...

    I got the same message on my iphone, the only weird thing is that I just passed 13 out of 24 months on our contract. I went to apple, as well as the At&t store, and they assured me that I can indeed upgrade to the new iphone 4 with just the price of the iphone(199 or 299) plus the 18 dollar fee, plus tax. So in all, I will owe about $233 while also extending the contract 2 years…which technically would really be just one more year. I think it's a great deal!

    interesting, I am already elligible for an upgrade as of April or May. I have been waiting on the new Iphone to come out, still on the 3G. My message says:

    As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and waive the $18 upgrade fee

    So mine will just be $200 + tax.

    FWIW: we tried this on my wife's 3 year old Motorola RAZR v3 and she received the message. I'm assuming you don't have to have an actual iPhone, to upgrade to an iPhone at the discounted rate.

    To the OP: couldn't you just wait until 9/16 and then you'll qualify for the early upgrade option? Of doesn't the "6 months early" only apply to people who's contracts expire in 2010?

    FWIW, I just did this and mine also said the $18 fee is waived, which isn't a huge deal anyway. Maybe it's because I'm within 2 months of my contract expiring, or AT&T has decided to skip the $18 fee since the original announcement.
