Iphone locked

Hi guys. I bought from a friend of mine a iphone 3G and the moment the phone starts it goes straight to emergency call only and ask me to insert a valid sim card with no pin lock. AT&T will mail me the sim card tomorrow but even tho it's strange that I can't use the phone as a ipod. Can someone tell me if they experience something like this.

This is normal until you insert a At&t simcard you can't get into the phone unless, You hacktivate with a 3rd party program.

It's how the phone is designed. You would have to jailbreak the phone in order to use it as an iPod without activating it.

I was freaking out. Can't wait till Tuesday when I get my sim card.
