Seems like this Ipad got sat on, while it was inside of a otterbox case...

I'm not sure if this is a smudge that won't go away or every tiny cracks.. Does anybody care to diagnose what this is and how to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the forum! :) Due to the poor resolution of your image, difficult to judge what the problem may be but looks like a damaged glass on the edge; an outside smudge should be removable - does the iPad still work?

Below is a pic of a damaged iPad from the web (more extensive, of course) w/ some of the broken glass looking similar to your device. You can always take the iPad to an Apple store or an authorized Apple repair shop for a diagnostic evaluation and repair estimate. If you are a DIY, then checkout the iFixit iPad Guides - pick the exact model; these are not easy fixes. Good luck and let us know your results - a topic that comes up occasionally. Dave

Thanks for the reply Dave.

Sorry about the above picture's resolution but yes ipad is still fully functional, there are no issues with that, thankfully.

Judging from the picture you posted and the fact that the "smudge" can't be washed away, I'm pretty sure that these are very small cracks.

This is an ipad 4th gen that I got in 2012. Also the ipad above had it's original glass replaced in December of 2014 because the original one was cracked much worse than this and it was to the point where the ipad was unusable (unless you wanted your fingers to get cut). I paid $150 for that repair, I'm not sure I want to pay $150 to repair this screen.

One more question, can anybody give me a guess at how much the Apple store would charge to fix that glass?

I think you're going to find that Apple will charge around $150 plus tax to replace the glass. You can probably do the job yourself for a lot less; just follow the link that Dave gave you in his reply.

Thanks, I may attempt the repair myself this time, as well as upgrading to a newer model.
