    2 vs. Original. First Buy.
Hey guys! I'm new to this forum, and new to the idea of purchasing an ipad. Would I be better off buying the ipad2 with 3G now, or buying the ipad first gen with 3G (for 300 dollars less) and then trying to sell it when the ipad3 comes out?

    thoughts?

That all depends on your finances, your expectations of the device for now and the future, and what your definition of "better off" means.

Please verify and include the exact model/year of your Mac and OS X version number (available from "About This Mac", then "More Info" on the Apple menu).

Don't bother buying anything now...just wait for the iPad 3. If you buy an iPad 1 now...it will be worth even less when the 3 comes out. Also...what models are you comparing (iPad 1 vs. iPad 2)...because $300 difference on the same configuration is think is unrealistic.

    Refurbished iPad 1 (16gig + 3G) sells for $449:

    Refurbished iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G 16GB (first generation)

    New iPad 2 (16gig + 3G) sells for $629:

    Apple iPad 2 - Buy iPad 2 Wi-Fi & iPad Wi-Fi + 3G

    That's a $180 difference. Even used iPad 1's (16gig + 3G)...probably aren't selling for much less than $449.

the apple retailer in my campus bookstore has the first gen ipad 64 GB 3G for 529 as opposed to the ipad 2 64GB 3G at 829. I don't really care to wait a whole year to get the ipad though, so don't buy anything isn't a particularly helpful answer.

I'd be verifying that 1st gen you found has 3G (and is 64GB) and/or there is nothing wrong with it. Sounds more like the price of one without 3G. If it does, I'd probably scarf that one up myself.

$529 for an iPad 1.0 64gig + 3G is a pretty good price. They sell refurbished at the Apple Store for $629:

Just because you don't like an answer doesn't mean it can't be helpful. If you spend $529 for an iPad 1 now...it will certainly be worth a good bit less when the iPad 3 comes out. When you try to sell it...the used market will be flooded with both iPad 1's & iPad 2's...depressing the prices.

If you don't buy anything now...then you will loose no money selling it later...and ALL your money can go towards an iPad 3.

Do you REALLY need a 64 gig + 3G model? If you REALLY want/need an iPad now...and intend on selling it when the iPad 3 comes out...buy as little as possible now. If you don't need 3G...and can go with less than 64 gig...the Apple Store has the 16gig WiFi model refurbished for $349...and I've seen them Craig's List for $300.

I think there's a bigger question to be asked here… what makes you so certain you WILL want the iPad 3 over the iPad 1 or 2? Well better said… is there a reason you believe that if you got the iPad 2, you will be unsatisfied with it come iPad 3?
