    iPhone Contacts vanished
My iPhone was connected to my older employer's Exchange. When I left, the exchange connection was stopped and I lost all my contacts along with that. While I have the contacts saved through export from Outlook, I don't particularly want to do that due to the manual effort of doing it. I did dutifully backup my iPhone prior to leaving my employer, so can I do a restore to get my contacts back?

    Thanks.

(After I am able to resolve the issue, I do want to know what really happened: How did I end up loosing my contacts? Why were they not stored on my phone? But first first, how to get the contacts back.)

I am not a user of Outlook nor profess specialised knowledge, but from your comment above, you may find some or all of the following links of assistance:

Ian, thanks for the reply. No one else has chimed in so far.

I have a back of the iPhone on my iMac. Can I do a restore of the contacts from it? I ask because the contacts were from the Exchange server, which is not connected to the phone, so would it restore the contacts?

Secondly, I have taken a few more photos and have more iMessages etc. since the time I did the backup. So if I restore the iPhone from the backup would it erase the new photos and iMessages? Can I do a restore of only the contacts?

    Thanks.

It doesn't matter that you are no longer connected to the server, the backup you made will restore the contacts. However, read below before proceeding.

If you restore your iPhone from that backup, it will overwrite everything that is currently on the phone. There are third party iPhone utilities that can do limited restores from a backup but they are not free. The backups made by iTunes do not have that capability. I personally use an iPhone utility called "iMazing 2". You can find out more about it with a google search and I have provided a link for you.

    Thanks, Chscag.

I tried two approaches: I used the technique given here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3614898?start=0

    1) Create a .CSV file of your outlook contacts -google it-
    2) Log-in to your Outlook.com (via hotmail or direct) account
    3) Choose "people tab" and "import contacts", select the .CSV file
    4) Import contacts to Outlook.com
    5) When your Iphone has Hotmail/Outlook.com installed it will now automatically synchronize all contacts.

In the last step Outlook App on iPhone shows my contacts but they don't show up in the main contacts of the iPhone. I don't see any option to make them show up there.

Then I tried a variant. I added the outlook.com account to the iOS Mail app. Then the contacts show up in the phone's contacts. Success? Yes, sort off I see all the contacts, but they have not been imported into iCloud or into the iPhone itself. Why do I need that? Because I don't want to keep the Outlook.com in the Mail app. I want to get the contacts into the phone itself. How do I do this?

    Thanks.

PS: By the way, do the contacts need to be in iPhone? Can they be *in* the iPhone?

You could import the .csv file into Contacts, on your Mac, then the contacts will sync to your phone.

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

I have the contacts on the contact App on my Mac. They are not in the phone, what is the reason for it?

By the way, what does it mean for the contact to be in the phone. Is the contact stored *in* the phone? Or is it in iCloud? If we have no iCloud or any email account, then where is the contact saved?

OK, so here is the free no-cost solution that worked for me:

    1) I had all my contacts exported from Outlook desktop in CSV form.
    2) I imported them into the contacts in an empty Gmail accounts.
    3) Then exported them to Vcard fromat from Gmail.
    4) Imported into iCloud contacts using the Vcard format.
    5) They show up in iPhone now.

Note: The Gmail is only used for the purpose of being able to suck in the CSV file and export out to Vcard format. Outlook.com/Hotmail.com don't seem to support that capability.

Note 2: I saw this solution in a YouTube video almost by accident. Someone may be able to search that video too. This was

Hope this also helps anyone else.

Thanks to everyone who helped. I would still like to know if I get anything more by buying some of the pograms mentioned in this thread.
