I've never updated OS on a phone before. When I update to iOS6 on my 4s is there something I need to do first? I just want to make sure all of my photos and apps will remain on my phone once updating is complete.

NEED to do ...... no.

But you should have a backup of any vital data prior to any kind of OS update on any kind of platform IMO.

If I were you I'd transfer all your photos onto your PC or Mac or into online storage.

An iTunes backup or iCloud backup (depending on which is your preference) will take care of apps, settings etc.

One hour ago I updated my iPhone4 (iOS 5.1.1) - no jailbreak- to iOS6. Itunes asked me to make a backup, which I declined, and after iOS6 was installed, everything was there (all settings, pictures, apps, music).
