Hi there Macfriends,

I've just been configuring iCloud, but there's this point that's has been worrying me.
I only have 200MB monthly internet on my phone, i love iCloud but i only want to use it with wifi. How can i make sure that iCloud will only work through my wifi, and never through my 3G connection? Is it possible to make sure iCloud doesn't use 3G even when 3G is on?

I tried googling this, but i found different websites saying different things about this issue.

Thank you for your help.
Greetings.:)

I don't think it's possible. I have a 4G iPad and when 4G (LTE) is turned on, iCloud and everything else will use it. I do keep 4G turned off most of the time because it's expensive (Verizon) and it uses the battery charge very quickly.

To answer your question about 3G, you probably have to turn it off or else opt for another usage plan other than 200 MB.

I have the same plan on a 3G equipped iPhone. I have gone into the contacts and calendar settings and turned off Push data. With push turned off I have several options for when the phone gets new data. Mine is set to manually.

I wonder though if that's going to prevent iCloud from using 3G? I don't own an iPhone so I can't really comment on the data "Push". With 4G turned on, my iPad defaults to using it for everything. Syncing contacts, bookmarks, iTunes, other data, etc.

Thank you for your replies.

I tried the same as you did, but just like chscag, i'm also wondering if it will stop iCloud from using the 3G connection.
When i put the settings just like on manual, it said: that it will only check for updates when the applications are in use. So this means, if we launch contacts or the agenda, it will use 3G?
Seems like there is no way off stopping iCloud to use 3G. I'm afraid the only option would be only turning iCloud on when 3G is turned off and WiFi on.

I hope someone knows another way.

'll have to do some digging on that a bit more. In my case I don't push a ;pt of data through so it wouldn't make much difference.

I thought I remembered reading something about this when I fist got the phone. As I recall some people were seeing more data pushed than they expected. I thought the standard behavior though was to look for a previously used wireless network first and restart to cell data if no wireless network was available.

Edit: Does this help answer the question http://digitalsanctum.com/2012/04/28/how-to-avoid-iphone-data-overage-charges/

As someone who has a larger data plan but uses far less of it than 200MB, I haven't found iCloud to be an issue. It doesn't push attachments, so you're not going to get a 5GB email or anything, and the non-attachment portion of email is trivially small.

There's nothing else I'm aware of to do with iCloud (I'm excluding iTunes Match since that is a separate, paid service) that could possibly use 200MB of data, so I think this concern may be moot. You would really have be pushing around a LOT of email, contacts and calendars to get above 20MB IMO.

There's an option to turn off Mobile data Under iCloud - Documents & Data. Documents are about the only significant potential source of data. Everything, as noted above, will only use tiny amounts of data
