iPhone/iPod iTunes Sync on Seperate Computers

Your Mac's Specs
MacBook Pro 13, Apple iPhone 8GB, Apple iPod Nano 16 GB, Apple iPod Classic 80GB
So I want to get an AppleTV. The problem is that I don't want to take up all my memory with movies on my MBP. If I get an external hard drive, is it possible to format it to run iTunes and hold all my media? And if so, I still want to keep my music on my MBP. So if, I go with an external hard drive, will my iPhone and iPods sync on both my MBP and my external hard drive if I authorize both in iTunes?
