    eMac Airport wireless....
I'm a new mac user. I've read that this eMac will take a wireless card that install just above the cdrom drive. Will any "Airport" card work? Or can I use an Orinoco or other wireless card in its spot?

    Thanks.

Like already mentioned...the Airport card you need for your eMac depends on the model...namely what is the CPU speed of your eMac?

And yes whatever Airport card you need...it will certainly fit since that's the way Apple designed it!

Alternatively...you could consider a USB network adapter...such as one from "Netgear"...looks like this:

...although I don't know how good the wireless performance is with them.

Here are the two types of Airport cards used in eMac's:

    Hope this helps,

The first eMac uses the bottom one in pigoo's pic - the 802.11b and the last eMac uses the top one in the pic, the 802.11b/g unit

And as a suggestion steer clear of those USB network adapters. Never have been able to get one to hook up and go online.

    Harry,

Have you ever used one of the Netgear USB wireless adapters...specifically the WG111 model?

It seems like it should be pretty good (from what I've read)...but like you mentioned...generally speaking, I haven't heard folks having many positive experiences with USB wireless network adapters.

    Thanks,

Yes it was and no connection at all. Australian distributor took it back as they advised drivers officially supported up to OS X.4. To be fair to Netgear they did suggest using Orange drivers, but with an extra charge of $15.00 for that driver, I took my money back.

Do you have any idea what version Netgear WG111 you had. There seems to be 3 versions...WG111v1, WG111v2, and WG111v3. Versions 2 & 3 are supposed to be Mac Compatible.

My eMac is the 1.25Ghz USB 2.0 model with 1.25GB of ram also( One 256mb stick and one 1GB stick). I found the slot for the Bottom airport card.

I have one of those netgear wifi cards, the wg111v3 and its junk on any computer i use it on, keeps getting disconnected.

From everything I've read online, I need the pcmcia looking airport card that slides in just about the cdrom drive behind the cover. I've looked and I do have that slot on this mac, and the wifi pigtail is there.

Thanks for the info on the Netgear WG111v3 card! I was just about to pull the trigger on one...but I guess I won't now.

Yes with a 1.25ghz eMac you need the "Airport Extreme" card pictured above (upper card in photo).

You can't use the bigger card...you need the smaller Airport Extreme card. The connector's are very different.
