Best setup options?

HI all - I have a challenge at home. I want to improve my isp speed and had a question I need advice on.

Firstly I have an iMac 24 running snow leopard with 4 gig.
I also have two macbooks also running snow leopard.

We connect to the net via an Airport Express Base Station version 6.3

I was as we tend to move the macbooks around and connect wirelessly I was wondering if I should somehow connect the iMac to the modem to improve my speed on accessing the web and just let the macbooks access via Airport?

My modem is a netcom NB 1300 and my isp connection is I believe at 512kps download. If I can connect directly to my iMac and then connect the macbooks to Airport - can anyone tell me the best way to do this?

That's not a function you can effect change upon. You would have to order a higher tier package in order to increase your bandwidth.

It wouldn't make a difference. You said your ISP's download speed is 512K. That's roughly 512Kb/s. Even the slowest WiFi connection is 11Mb/s. Note the distinction between Kb/s and Mb/s - there are 1000 Kbs in a Mb, so 11b/s is roughly 11,000kb/s. As you can see, your 512Kb/s is a very tiny fraction of the bandwidth allotted to even a very slow WiFi connection.

Now, if your challenge was to improve file transfers between your Macs on your local network, that would be a different story. But switching connection types on your internal network wouldn't change your Internet speeds one iota.

Contact your ISP and ask them about increasing your bandwidth. Of course, there will be increased charges associated with a faster connection, but 512Kb/s is incredibly slow in this day and age. Most DSL connections are capable of at least 1.5Mb/s and usually those tiers (at least in the US) are still very affordable.
