I am considering getting an Airport router. I am trying to figure out if I need to spend the extra $80 for the Extreme. The only difference I see is that the Express does not provide for any wired devices being attached. Is this a correct assessment? I know there are other differences but that seems to be the primary one.

Thanks

Not being able to hard wire into the Express is a major difference between the two. If you intending to leave the router in place, and usually have one or more computers close by that same location, I would get the Extreme. I don't like the idea of having my computer on WiFi 24/7. Yes, I know that encryption and password protection are pretty good safeguards. But still, a hard wired connection is more private and secure.

I just got the Extreme and it works well, with two windows machines up stairs and my iMac in the basement. I do have it next to the iMac and have it wired and using Airport as well. Still being somewhat of a novice to macs, how do I know which one I am using with the iMac, the ethernet or the Airport as I am online? Also, what do I do to just use the ethernet so that I might just be a little more secure?

Shut the wireless off if it is connected directly to your iMac. Click the AirPort icon to turn it off.
