Connecting MAC OS X 10.5.7 to WIN XP Home

Hello,

I am newby to Macs and networking. Managed to set a home wi-fi network for a PC (Win XP Home SP3) and a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.7. The PC is connected (cabled) to a Linksys router and the Mac is connecter wirelessly.

I can access the Internet from both machines, but I cant manage to get the Win XP Home to access the OS X 10.5.7. Have read many articles about it, but none of them seemed to address the problem completely (older versions of MAC OS X, incomplete info, etc.).

The only thing I want to do is to access one or more Win XP Home shared folders using a password-protected account, but (please, help me), I would appreciate if somebody could give the full information.

By the way, I have Norton 360 running on my Win XP Home but, as I understood, the Window firewall allows for exceptions for shared folders and printers.

Norton 360 is likely the problem. Unless you've specifically opened up the firewall for File & Print Sharing, you're not going to see those shares available.

You would need to find someone experienced with that product to get specific steps for enabling file and print sharing. I would contact Symantec's tech support or take a look at their knowledge base. This really has nothing to do with the Mac, you probably wouldn't be able to see the shares from another Windows machine either.

Make sure both are in the same workgroup on the network. You may need to create or select a folder to share on the Mac and share it via Samba in systems preferences > sharing. Make sure to select a user for the Samba account. Make sure sharing for whatever folder you want to share in Windows is turned on as well. I'd recommend having a user for the Mac created on the Win system and vice versa on the Mac. I did this so the users had the same password as well. You should be able to connect and log in to either system with the account and passwords and select the option to map network drive and "reconnect at login" on the Win, and "add to keychain" on the Mac. That's all I've got regarding sharing. Good luck!

Yes, Norton 360 was the problem... At first, I completely turned off the firewall and it worked just right. Then, I found out that the program allows for specifying machines that can access the PC even with the firewall turned on.
