Does adding the folder to the library not do it?

Little lengthy but permanent solution:
Go to iTunes preferences>Click on Advanced>General>iTunes Music Folder Location>(Select the folder of external drive where you have all of your music)

Also deselect the button keep iTunes Music Folder organized as you are organizing your music your way without copying it again..

Once done as instructed above...drag your music folder into itunes once...

And hopefully you are done..

The next time you'll open iTunes your all the music should appear there & you should be able to play it just by simply clicking on any song in iTunes..
