Installing Airport Card in PowerMac G4 (MDD)

Please help and advise. From what I am told, I need the Airport Card (not Airport Extreme) for my G4 (mdd) so I purchased the card and went to install it. The problem is, it doesn't fit in the slot. There seems to be a metal bracket in the way, making the card too wide to slide in. I don't think this is the adapter, as the metal piece seems to be permanently attached (although I'm not 100 percent sure...does this thing come out?)

Also, the pinholes on the card go straight across in two uninterrupted rows, whereas the pins in the slot are divided in the middle (looking like it would accomodate the Extreme Card.)

Can someone help with this? Since this was a later model G4, did they set it up for Extreme? Thanks, bob

that bracket s to hold the card in place, it comes out. Im not sure if the quicksilver is set up for extreme, it may not be,I know it takes a standard airport card internally, but its only a "b" card, you can get a "g" fairly cheap.

so

you're certain that metal bracket is removable? And once removed, the Airport Card should slide in?

I'm just nervous forcing the bracket. What kind of card is it supposed to hold? The opening looks to small for anything I've seen. Also, Does the airport/extreme card typically have a bracket that holds it in place?

For those who have this model, does the spot where the card "snaps" into have a division in the middle of the pins (because the Airport Card does not.)

Thanks for your help.

I fear the g4 quicksilver is not compaible with this card, I suggest returning it, and purchasing one online thats compatible, like this one , or youll have to go non apple. buffalo makes some nice alternatives. Id recommend this one if you go with a non apple card. :mac:

i believe

that's the card I have (the older Airport Card.) I just realized that I have the G4 June 2003/Dual 1.25, and from all I can tell, it takes that older card. Now the only problem is that metal piece that is getting in the way....

If it is removable, then great!

yes, its sorta flexible, I know it comes out, sorta like the back of a pin used in cartoons to hold diapers on babies, it pops out and in.

Solution

As it turns out, my machine takes the Airport Extreme card. It's the FW 800 model, and it seems this is the only G4 to be equipped with the Extreme. I appreciate all the help and time.

Cheers!
